Is it too late to prep?

I received an email yesterday from a gentleman. His premise got me to thinking. The gist of the letter was that this guy had put “preppers” into the crazy category. He said he had scoffed at the idea of stockpiling food, gear, weapons, etc. He said he labeled it “nonsense!”

But the events of the past few days and weeks have scared him, and he now realizes he was wrong. He has done nothing up to this point, and now he wonders “Is it too late to prep?”

The obvious answer is no. It is NEVER too late to prep. And while not just our nation, but our society, and parts of our civilization stand on the precipice, we do not know what is going to happen. I fully expect more civil unrest and chaos in the days and weeks ahead. But that does not mean it is going to happen. We could be days from the beginning of major calamities. Or we could be weeks. Or months. Maybe it calms down and nothing major happens? We don’t know. But if you have not yet started to prep, then start prepping RIGHT NOW!

First, I told him to read my article, How to start prepping in 5 easy steps. The first thing it mentions is sitting down and formulating emergency plans. I told him he needs to do that immediately.

Next, I told him to check out the article I wrote on building your 2 week food supply. You can check it out by clicking the link here. I have also written on 10 items that you can stock up on long term. Click here to read that. I told him to get to his local store, and start picking those items up right away.

When it comes to gear, I mentioned the article Urban survival gear you may not have thought about, and I mentioned some things he should be doing every day to help stay prepared.

Essentially, I told him to read those articles, and follow their advice. Go to the store. Buy the food that has a good shelf life that you will eat. Buy enough water to last a few weeks. Get extra pet food, over the counter medicines, etc. While I have noticed the prices on foods are going up, and in some cases the availability going down, food is still easy to get.

Our products include knives, cutlery, swords, flashlights, tents, hunting gear, and more. Check us out!

That being said, I told him there are some areas where he will no longer be able to prep. At least not for the foreseeable future. But I said do not lose hope, as there are work arounds.

I told him that at this point to skip the online emergency food stores. While there are still plenty of sites out there that offer emergency food storage, it could take you weeks or even months to receive it. I ordered a few pounds of dried eggs and milk this time last year, before news of the pandemic reached the mainstream media. It still took almost 6 weeks to get to me. And by the time it did reach my door, their websites were showing these items as sold out. I can only imagine that even if they have stock for sale, they might still have delayed shipping times. I’m sure these stores’ orders have certainly not decreased. Instead, buy all your food/supplies locally right now.

When it comes to self defense, you may not find much in the way of firearms, depending upon where you live. And even if you do, you will absolutely NOT find ammo. To confirm this theory, this morning I went to my local sporting good store (Academy Sports and Outdoors) and to my local Wal-Mart. Academy had some pistols, shotguns, and a few hunting rifles in stock. In the past, the walls were lined with firearms of all sorts. Not anymore.

And when it came to ammo, they were cleaned out. I found a few boxes of .308 Winchester, 9 boxes of 6.5 Creedmoor, and a few boxes of 28 gauge shotgun shells. That was it! According to the clerk, those had arrived this morning, and the clerk said they would be gone within a few hours. That was all they had and no more ammo was scheduled to come in for a day or two.

Notice how few long guns they have in the background. Their supply of handguns was similar in numbers. Ammo is gone

At Wal-Mart, they had zero firearms of any kind, but they did have 2 boxes of .22, and 2 boxes of 12 gauge bird shot (100 round box.) That was it. So if you do not have any firearms, I think it is too late at this point. At least as of the time of this writing.

Editor’s note: As of right now, firearms and ammo currently are back in supply. But should another major calamity hit, these hits will be gone in a heartbeat!

I’m sure there are some places online that will sell you ammo at exorbitant prices. However, even if you are lucky enough to get a firearm and a few boxes of ammo, that will not be enough to practice shooting, let alone familiarize yourself with your new firearm. And I don’t see this changing anytime soon.

However, I did notice that Academy had several bows and boxes and boxes full of arrows. When it comes to self defense, you could buy a bow and a bunch of arrows. And you would be able to practice a lot, assuming you have a space to do so. Carrying a bow and arrows is not discreet, but they are quiet. For more on bows for self defense, please check out this link here.

In addition, both stores still had knives, machetes, etc. So yes, even without firearms, there are still self defense options out there. You can also use everyday objects for self defense if you find yourself in a pinch. I encourage you to read an article on 5 discreet weapons you can carry almost anywhere.

So is it too late to prep? No. Even if you wait until the last second, you can still do things to try and prepare yourself for what might come. It is not the same as someone who has spent months or years prepping. But it is better than nothing.

    A couple of Ideas.
I built a homemade teardrop camper from a harbor freight 400 dollar trailer. I also use it as a pantry and keep it in the garage (always ready to go). It has all that I need for about 2 months. Hook it up and go.
Either buy a good first aid kit or make your own (several) and keep under the seat off your car, truck, or in the camper. Very cheap insurance indeed.
God bless the makers of the Ziplock gallon bags. I keep one in every vehicle with 3 pair of warm socks, 2 regular underwear, 1 long underwear bottom, 1 bandana, 1 t shirt. Nice warm clothing in rainy or cold weather.
God bless you all and good luck.
