What you need to know about preparing for a possible gun ban

Without wasting any time, the new Presidential regime is attempting to cram more gun control legislation through on the American people. Without getting into the politics of the situation, I believe that new draconian gun laws could be just around the corner. God forbid we have another school shooting, and I fear gun control will happen so fast our head will spin.

This would mean that tens of thousands on Americans would no longer be able to defend themselves. At the same time, criminals are being coddled and even emboldened.

To me, this has reached complete lunacy. But unfortunately, that is the world we currently live in. And as such, I feel like now is the time to prepare for coming gun control/ban measures if you are not already doing so.

What’s At Stake

In the previous “assault weapons” ban of 1994, semi automatic firearms with certain characteristics were banned from production, manufacture, and importation. However, those already legally owned were grandfathered in. While I would like to assume that should something similar happen today and legal owned firearms would be grandfathered in, there is no guarantee.

Some items, like bump stocks, were outlawed by a stroke of a pen. So when it comes to our second amendment, nothing that the government would attempt to do at this point would surprise me. But that does not mean you cannot take steps now to ensure that you protect your 2nd amendment rights.

The first thing that gun grabbers will target are the scary black rifles. Any semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine will be on the chopping block. These rifles were banned back in 1994. Fortunately, it was only a 10 year ban, and  by 2004 the ban was over. But make no mistake. There are politicians who want them banned forever.

For clarification on what was banned in 1994:

Under the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, the definition of “assault weapon” included specific semi-automatic firearm models by name, and other semi-automatic firearms that possessed two or more from a set certain features:[14]

  • A semi-automatic Yugoslavian M70AB2 rifle.
  • An Intratec TEC-DC9 with 32-round magazine; a semi-automatic pistol formerly classified as an assault weapon under federal law.

Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:

  • Folding or telescoping stock
  • Pistol grip
  • Bayonet mount
  • Flash hider or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
  • Grenade launcher

Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:

  • Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
  • Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor
  • Barrel shroud safety feature that prevents burns to the operator
  • A manufactured weight of 50 ounces (1.41kg) or more when the pistol is unloaded
  • A semi-automatic version of a fully automatic firearm.

Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:

  • Folding or telescoping stock
  • Pistol grip
  • Detachable magazine.

The law also categorically banned the following makes and models of semi-automatic firearms and any copies or duplicates of them, in any caliber:

  • Norinco, Mitchell, and Poly Technologies Avtomat Kalashnikovs (AKs) (all models) Imports banned in 1989*
  • Action Arms Israeli Military Industries UZI and Galil Imports banned in 1989*
  • Beretta AR-70 (SC-70) Imports banned in 1989*
  • Colt AR-15 Legal
  • Fabrique National FN/FAL, FN-LAR, FNC Imports banned in 1989*
  • SWD (MAC type) M-10, M-11, M11/9, M12 Legal
  • Steyr AUG Imports banned in 1989*
  • INTRATEC TEC-9, TEC-DC9, TEC-22 Legal
  • Revolving cylinder shotguns such as (or similar to) the Street Sweeper and Striker 12 Legal

In 2004, a research report commissioned by the National Institute of Justice found that if the ban was renewed, the effects on gun violence would likely be small and perhaps too small for reliable measurement, because rifles in general, including rifles referred to as “assault rifles” or “assault weapons,” are rarely used in gun crimes. That study, by the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology, University of Pennsylvania, found no significant evidence that either the assault weapons ban or the ban on magazines holding more than 10 rounds had reduced gun murders.

Multiple studies made it clear that the ban had little to no effect on gun crime and gun violence, since the vast majority of gun crime does NOT involve rifles. The gun grabbers will continue to beat this drum regardless of the facts and studies that prove their position wrong. And I believe that the gun grabbers’ efforts could include even more than what was banned previously in 1994.

Magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are on the “naughty” list as well. Pistol and rifle mags both. Speaking of pistols, there has been talk about banning ALL semi-automatic firearms, which would lump every semi-automatic pistol in possible/future gun bans as well. At the moment it is just talk. But that is how it begins.

Anyway, at least you have an idea of what they seek to take from you.

Actions to Take

For starters, check to see if your city, county, and state have taken steps to ensure that they are a 2nd amendment sanctuary. Consult the map below. Then contact your elected officials at EVERY LEVEL. City, county, state, and Federal. Tell them to defend our 2nd amendment rights…up to and including becoming a 2nd amendment sanctuary!

If you are unsure what a 2nd amendment sanctuary is, basically it is a city, county, or other jurisdiction that has passed a resolution or bill that declares that restrictive gun control laws passed by a higher legislative body, such as the federal government or a state legislature, violate the Constitution and will not be enforced in that jurisdiction. This is used to send a message to the higher legislative bodies that people of that locale will NOT submit to laws that violate the Constitution.

Montana just passed Constitutional Carry laws!!

Call all your representatives. Email them. Write them letters. And most importantly, VOTE. When you contact your local and state reps, many times they will check the voting records to see if you vote in the local elections. I promise you, if you only vote in the presidential elections, they will ignore your concerns!!

Now this may not stop an overzealous US/state Attorney from trying to prosecute you for violating these gun control laws. But if enough people put their foot down and stand up, you could see the courts begin to back down. They may be concerned about such things as jury nullification, which is where a jury will find a defendant innocent simply because they believe the law is unjust.

The court systems experienced this sort of thing during Prohibition for example. Juries would find bootleggers innocent because they (the jury) disagreed with laws against alcohol.

I would also encourage you to join pro-gun groups like GOA. Check their website frequently as it stays current with all of the latest news on firearms legislation.

Next, if you have the means and ability to do so (and for what ever reason have not yet done so) start purchasing the firearms and the firearm accessories that could be banned. I would grab some now, while you can.

Items to Consider

So for starters, I would look at purchasing at least 1 semi-automatic rifle. I have always believed that there are quality budget rifles that are hopefully in your price range. If money is tight, then click the link to find out more about quality budget rifles you should be looking at.

That being said, if you have the money and can afford it, you might look at purchasing a higher end rifle. Companies like BCM and LMT make outstanding, premium AR rifles and components. These high end rifles will not only retain and increase in value as time goes on. At some point, these premium rifles could become collectors items.

You can make compelling arguments both for and against high end vs budget rifles. I am not advocating one over the other. I am merely advocating getting a semi-automatic rifle(s) while you can.

For you AK fans, I would look at getting a foreign made AK if you can. While the American market has made great strides and has closed the “quality” gap with its foreign competitors, right now the foreign made AK will have a higher value and will be worth more in the long run. But if you are on a budget, there are solid made American AKs that you can grab and they will serve you well.

Here are a few reviews I have done on both ARs and AKs so please check them out.

Next on the list is standard capacity magazine. I’m not sure what the gun grabbers’ fixation on magazines that hold over 10 rounds is. But they always target them.

When it comes to AR/AK mags, I really like Magpul magazines. Currently, the price on these have not risen, and you can still get quite a few without breaking the bank.

The D&H aluminum magazines have gone up a little in price, but not too much. These are great for long-term storage, so I’d grab at least a few. I keep mine loaded, and stored for safe keeping.

If you are worried that storing your magazines loaded might damage them, don’t be! When it comes to the life of the magazine spring, let me quote Shooting Illustrated:

Even when kept fully compressed, a magazine spring will retain its energy long past the operational life of the ammunition…When using quality magazines with quality ammunition, stored and maintained properly, you can leave them loaded as long as you want to without any reservation.

Yep, the only time your magazines should be unloaded is when you have a smoking barrel. (Or if you are disassembling them for cleaning.) When the chips are down, an empty magazine is worthless. So keep those babies loaded!

If you have other rifles outside of the AR/AK platform, I would certainly grab some extra mags for them as well. And I wouldn’t just stop with rifle mags. Be sure to grab some magazines for your pistols.

I’d start out with some addition Glock mags that hold more than 10 rounds. Glock mags are extremely versatile, and will fit in more firearms than just Glocks. A lot of your pistol caliber carbines such as your AR9s, Kel-Tec Sub 2000s, Ruger PC carbines, etc all take Glock magazines.

Currently, Glock magazines have not risen in price, and are still very affordable. But be sure to get the genuine Glock mags, and not the knock-off brands. I have a few of those knockoffs, and I have had some issues with them. You might also look at getting a few of the stick Glock mags. Some of the 22, 24, 33 round stick mags will fly off the shelves pre-ban. So get them now while you can.

In addition to mags, I would grab some AR lower receivers. The only part that is serialized on an AR is the lower receiver. So in order to purchase this part, you must fill out a ATF 4473 form and complete the back ground process. If you order the lower receiver through the mail, it will be shipped to a FFL dealer, who can do the transfer for you. (For a small fee usually.)  So find a local firearms dealer you trust!

Unfortunately, these have slowly risen in price over the past several months. It started with the rush on gun stores due to the pandemic. Now with the current political situation in the US, I do not see their prices dropping anytime soon, if ever. And the prices of premium lowers is even higher. (For more on building ARs, please click this link.)
Another option is purchasing some 80% lowers and machining the receiver yourself. While the price on 80% lowers have increased, you do not need a ATF 4473 form. You will however need the proper tools and equipment to complete the task. Here is a great video (that is NOT me) on putting together an 80% lower.

I would recommend purchasing other, non serialized parts for ARs. But be warned, the prices on these parts have skyrocketed. The Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) for example, has doubled and in some cased tripled in price. Other part kits have increased significantly as well.

At the moment, these are not regulated, and hopefully you will be able to build out your AR after a ban. Of course this speculation is based upon these items not being banned back in 1994. Things could be very different this time around.

Currently, you cannot find ammo. And if you do, the prices are astronomically high. But I believe that this scarcity will not last forever. At some point, supply will catch back up to demand. When ammo returns and prices go back to normal, start stockpiling. Also, cross your fingers that any sort of gun ban does not spill over into the ammo supply. We have seen cities like Seattle now require background checks when purchasing ammo. California passed a similar law, but it was overturned in the court system. Unfortunately, I could see anti-gun politicians target ammo, making it more difficult to obtain. So stockpile when you can.

As a massive firearms enthusiast and a huge 2nd amendment supporter, I will admit these are scary times for me. I am fortunate to live in pro 2A state. But I worry about the ripple effects of gun control on a national level. We HAVE to continue to fight for our rights, and can no longer remain silent. Please, make your voices heard, and stand up for not just our 2nd amendment, but our Constitution as a whole. I fear it is merely hanging by a thread! If we do not fight for the Constitution, it cannot save us.

Are there other firearm/accessories that are not listed here that you would get? Let us know in the comments below.
